January is almost out the door so it’s time to submit your events for February if you haven’t done so already. You can submit your events in one of two ways

The Big Screen: 21-27 June

Man Of Steel may have hit the biggest box office of Irish cinema last weekend, but reviews coming in from it are still pretty mixed. Could it be topped by Brad Pitt’s World War Z which opens this week? Here’s a look at what’s coming up in the cinema this week. If you missed After Earth last week, well, it’s gone, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for it. New to the cinema this week include World War Z, Snitch and Despicable Me 2. Take a look at the trailers below for more.

World War Z

United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.

Snitch

A father (Dwayne Johnson / The Rock) goes undercover for the DEA in order to free his son who was imprisoned after being set up in drug deal.

Despicable Me 2

Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal. Starring Steve Carell, Ken Jeong, Miranda Cosgrove and more.

Man Of Steel

A young journalist is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race. We all know the story, but we’ve just never seen it like this. Stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Russel Crowe and more, directed by Zack Snyder (he of The Watchmen and 300).

The Hangover III

This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.

Epic

A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group characters in order to save their world — and ours.

Kids Mini Marathon This Weekend

Weather-wise, things are looking up again for the weekend which can only be a good thing as Kilkenny Castle plays host to the the annual Kids Mini Marathon and Adult 5K in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin and Chernobyl Children International.

Registration is on the day from 1pm @ Kilkenny Castle Entrance Gates (Second Gates)

Kids Run of 2.5k @ 2pm followed by the Adult5K.
Entry to Kids Run €5
Entry to Adult Run €10.

An Adult 5k will take place directly after the main event also in the Castle Park ensuring the whole family can participate and have fun all while raising much needed funds for both Children’s Charities.

Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin is currently running a campaign to help ‘Fix Crumlin’ and desperately seeking to raise €8 million euro to make improvements and to buy much needed equipment.

Chernobyl Children International have a strong relationship with the Irish people with over 1000 children arriving to Ireland each year as part of the Rest and Recuperation programme run by the charity and need funds to continue their work with the people affected by the Chernobyl Disaster.

Superman is back! This week sees the long awaited arrival of Man Of Steel in both 3D and 2D to the cinema in all its new and rebooted glory. The Big Screen: 31 May – 6 June

Here’s a look at some of the movies showing in Kilkenny starting this June Bank Holiday weekend. For full times and details, check out our cinema listings here. If you missed Iron Man 3, there’s no chance of catching it this weekend as it makes way for The Purge, screening from Friday.

Wishbone Gallery Launching In Kilkenny

In good news for the local arts scene, the City’s newest arts space launches this coming Friday evening.

Located over Ristorante Rinuccini, the Wishbone Gallery is a new gallery and retail space for artists, designers and craftworkers.

Among the activities for the launch this Friday include makeovers from Eyerbrushed Makeup Academy and a cookery demo with Masterchef finalist Claire Ann O’Keeffe. Hats, jewellery and loads more will be on display with the proceedings kicking off at 5pm.

Also stirring this week is the opening of Laura Angell’s Stuart Strokes Otters exhibition at the Upstairs Gallery in the Watergate Theatre. That show launches at 7pm today (Wednesday) followed by the Town Arts Social in Brewery Corner from 8.30pm with a free comedy show on offer.

Kilkenny Gospel Festival Choir A Few Weeks Away

Kilkenny Gospel Choir Festival 2013The second International Kilkenny Gospel Choir Festival is set to get underway on 14 June.

This year’s festival brings with it three main events and will run all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday this year. Friday features a number of workshops includng a special schools event, Having Fun With Gospel Music. With other workshops taking place across the weekend, an outdoor concert will be held on the Parade on the Saturday evening before the closing gala concert on the Sunday night.

The festival weekend is the first of three big dates.

In July, the Mississippi Gospel Choir arrive in Kilkenny on the 27th, performing at midday mass in St. Mary’s Cathedral on the 28th.

Then in August, Dr. Eddie Jones returns to Kilkenny with the Alabama University Gospel Choir for a weekend of music, workshops and more including a Sunday concert in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

The three weekends combine for what organisers are called a ‘Summer Of Inspirational Gospel Music’.
